Ren's fate was woven long before her birth, with the onset of Lucinda's story. Lucinda was a talented portal weaver and devout follower of the Evlagian goddess, Taladi. Evlage was a dying realm, and as the seams of the universe came undone in that distant world, Taladi, the creator goddess, was able to catch a glimpse of another, younger universe that could be consumed to save her own: Actaera. After several unsuccessful attempts with other champions to cross the rift between universes, Taladi managed to guide Lucinda to Actaera, setting her plan to consume their world in motion. Instead of biding her time in isolation as Taladi had wished, however, Lucinda chose to venture out into this new world and discover what it had to offer. As a result, her unusual presence was noticed before Taladi could transfer a greater extent of her powers and will to Lucinda. Her champion's presence was detected by Actae himself, the creator god of Actaera. Ever the curious, experiment-minded soul, Actae took it upon himself to study Lucinda and her odd powers, which eventually resulted in the creation of a child with lineage from both universes. The child had two purposes: to serve as a curiosity, an unknown variable that would wander the world and provide Actae with data; and should it ever come to be necessary, the child would be absorbed by Actae as a reserve of power. This 'child', however, ended up becoming a set of twins due to the discreet influence Taladi exerted on the process.
As the secondborn, unintentional child of Actae's halfling twins, Ren was deemed to have inadequate magical potential to fulfill either role and was to be disposed of shortly after her birth. However, after Lucinda pleaded with the creator god, Ren was instead stripped of her immortality and cast out into the world under the assumption that she would either die in the wilds, or on the off chance that she survived, live out the uneventful life of a mortal. She was later discovered in a patch of Vesperland woods by Ida Thasor, an aging alchemist with a troubled past, and was taken in. Due to Ida's reputation in the province, she and all who interacted with her were regarded as outcasts. But despite the loneliness that lingered in their lives, she still loved Ren like the daughter she never had, and the two lived together happily.
A few days after Ren turned sixteen, however, she would wake up in the middle of the night to find her home ablaze. When she found Ida in her chambers, her adoptive mother was dead, brutally murdered at the feet of a red-haired masked stranger. The stranger, unbeknownst to her, was her twin brother Halvatt Sali. He proceeded to kidnap Ren and imprison her in a dilapidated Vesper ruins, leaving her confused and terrified. A few days later, Ren overheard a conversation between the masked stranger and an unfamiliar voice, debating on how they would extract Ren's hidden powers once they cut her body open in ritual sacrifice. Terrified of what was to come, the latent magic within Ren began to stir, causing her to shapeshift for the first time in her life. Now in the form of a dragon, she broke free of her magical prison and fled the scene, knowing nothing but that she had to run.
After hours of fear, adrenaline, and unsteady flying, Ren managed to land in a secluded forest grove, where she would shift back into a human. Though she wanted to continue to run and find help, she had used up much of her kheji and struggled to move. Using the last of her strength to cry out for help, she caught the attention of a passerby halfling, Aidan Fasura. He took her to the Lumen town of Sausetnyur, where his uncle Zagun resided, and nursed her back to health. Upon hearing her strange story, Aidan offered to take Ren to Rehjolvnatys, the plane of the divine, suggesting it as a way for her to find the answers she needed. With nowhere else to go, Ren accepted, hopeful that this new path in life would eventually lead her to the truth of what happened that fateful night.
The gods of Rehjolvnatys were taken aback by Ren's ability to achieve a draconic form, a trait only seen in offspring of the upper echelon of divinity. However, try as they might, the gods could not accurately determine her heritage. The composition of her being was entirely unremarkable, with the only exception being her strangely poor control of kheji. After much delibration, they allowed the Elder god Yrets to adopt her, not wanting her strange abilities to fall into Vesper hands. Given the gift of immortality, Ren then became a full-fledged halfling and began her training as a member of the Rehjolvnatys Royal Guard, eager to grow and follow her heart wherever it would lead her in this vast, unpredictable world.
